“What do you want to be when you grow up?”
It’s a simple and very common question we ask our kids and yet not all kids are given the same privilege and opportunity to be who they want to be when they grow up.
It was a usual Saturday morning for me in the area where we, a team of student volunteers, are on a mission to help the less privileged children in the city to holistically develop their skills, abilities, personality, and values to grow as responsible adults in the future.
We had our usual morning playtime when a few kids came up to us and shared their admiration for the organization and the team. They went on to tell how they want to grow like their ate and kuya student volunteers, and how they dream to get into the same university as their ate’s and kuya’s.
Perhaps, it should have warmed my heart but instead, it broke me. It broke me to think that the reality and the culture of poverty where these kids are born from would immensely hinder them from achieving their dreams. Education in itself is a privilege that is not afforded to everyone and the communal helplessness mindset of which their community believes in would cripple them from even trying.
It made me question the very foundation of what we do -- why are we even trying to mold them and encourage them when the only thing we do afterward is to hope that they can make it on their own? If we don’t provide the avenues and open opportunities for them to grow, then all of the efforts poured into the programs is only but a glimmer of hope.
Years after, I couldn’t let the memory rest peacefully in my mind. I felt like a hypocrite to feed them all these dreams and fantasies that weren’t even grounded in reality. I had to do something. I had to try, at least. I know I have to give them that opportunity, I have to give them a fighting chance.
With that, I gathered up the courage to leave my corporate aspirations behind and begin on this journey with Staffz.
If we can change at least one life by simply running our business, imagine the kind of impact we can make if we can encourage others to do the same, one task at a time.
